Acrylic Plastic is generally accepted as an affordable and durable alternative to using glass. It is strong, light and incredibly transparent. It has been used commercially since the early 1900s and continues to be one of the most frequently used plastics in the manufacturing industry.
Production Process
Acrylic is a synthetic plastic that is part of the acryl group, derived from acrylic acid. The most well known form is 'polymethyl methacrylate', otherwise known as Perspex. It is a polymer, which means it is made up of many molecules linked together in a chain. Due to the chemical structure of polymers they can be specifically made to have certain properties. This important characteristic means acrylic plastic is manufactured for its transparency and resistance to violent light.
Use Recycled Plastic!
In understanding the attributes and qualities of using acrylic plastic it's also important to address some of it's negative aspects. As a product of crude oil the production of acrylic plastic strains the increasingly scarce supply of natural resource. On top of this, when a plastic draws to the end of its useful life it is particularly difficult to dispose of. Although it will deteriorate, left alone it will never decompose entirely. This has led to huge problems of plastic in landfills.
To help reduce the negative environmental impact of acrylic plastics we must encourage the use of recycled plastic. Recycled products are growing in use every day and we can now use tailor acrylic to fit your requirements. Recycled plastic can be mixed with plastic that has not been processed before to reduce cost without sacrificing properties.
Reduce your environmental footprint while continuing to gain from the fantastically cheap promotion that acrylics keyrings have always given!
